CVS Store History

CVS was founded in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1963 by brothers Sidney and Stanley Goldstein, alongside partner Ralph Hoagland. The name “CVS” stands for “Customer Value Store.” CVS was immediately successful; within the first year, the company already had opened 16 stores. Within four years, CVS stores included pharmacies, and by 1970, more than 100 CVS stores could be found throughout the East Coast. In 1997, CVS made a historic acquisition of REVCO, purchasing 2,500 stores—the biggest acquisition in the US pharmaceutical industry. There are more than 7,600 stores today throughout the country.
