BJ’s is a chain of membership-only warehouse clubs headquartered in Westborough, MA. BJ’s History
Given BJ’s roots in New England, it’s no wonder that the company enjoys a strong foothold in the region. Founded in 1984 by Mervyn Weich, an executive from the discount department store chain Zayre, the first store opened in Medford, MA under the name BJ’s Wholesale Club, inspired by his daughter Beverly Jean’s initials. Membership was first opened to public servants such as government workers and hospital and bank employees, but by 1993 the company had a total of 52 stores. Today, a BJ’s membership is available to anyone over the age of 18. The company is privately held but still keeps its headquarters right outside of Boston, and remains as the leading wholesale retailer in the Northeast.
