Harbor Freight History
Harbor Freight Tools was founded in 1977 in California by Eric Smidt and his father, and originally was a mail-order business. As the mail-order business grew, the company started to acquire other small tool catalog businesses and US General, another tool and equipment distributor. In 1980, Harbor Freight Tools opened its first retail store in Lexington, Kentucky, and proved to be successful and grew into their business model. Today, the company runs over 450 stores across the US and employs over 11,000 workers.
