Rite Aid History

Rite Aid was founded in 1962 in Scranton, Pennsylvania by Alex Grass. Originally the store was called Thrift D, and sold health and beauty supplies. By 1965, the company had over 20 stores through acquisitions and had expanded into five northeastern states. Also in 1965, the company started adding pharmacies to its locations. In 1968, Thrift D officially changed its name to Rite Aid. Ten years after opening, the company had over 220 stores in ten states, from a successful business model and the ability to purchase stores through acquisitions. Today, Rite Aid is one of the largest drug store chains in the U.S., with over 2400 stores.
